Bridging Time - Chamber Winds Recital

Ma maitrise en direction musicale tire bientôt à sa fin. En décembre prochain, j'aurai terminé cette aventure de plus de deux ans! Un de mes projets dans le cadre de cette maitrise est de diriger des ensembles de musique de chambre. Je vous présente donc le concert Bridging Time. Pour l'occasion, j'ai choisi de présenter les pièces suivantes: Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Chamber Wind Ensemble de Zachary Smith, une oeuvre écrite l'an dernier que j'ai eu la chance de diriger lors du récital de graduation en composition de Zach; Little Threepenny Music (for Wind Ensemble) de Kurt Weill, un arrangement pour music de chambre de son opéra; Ebony Concerto par Igor Stravinsky et Prelude, Fugue and Riffs de Leonard Bernstein, deux pièce écrite pour le Big Band de Woody Herman dans les années 50 qui mettra en vedette la clarinettiste Rebecca Hissen.

Le concert aura donc lieu à la salle Phillip T. Young de la faculté de musique de l'Université de Victoria, mercredi le 26 octobre prochain à 20h.

My master's degree is soon coming to an end. In December, I will be graduating from this adventure of more then two years. One of my projects for this degree is to conduct a variety of chamber ensembles. It is with that purpose in mind that I present to you the concert Bridging Time. For this occasion, I have chosen to perform the following repertoire: Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Chamber Wind Ensemble by Zachary Smith, piece composed last year that I had the honour to conduct in it's premiere for Zach's composition graduation recital; Little Threepenny Music (for Wind Ensemble) by Kurt Weill, an arrangement for chamber music ensemble of his famous opera; Ebony Concerto by Igor Stravinsky and Prelude, Fugue and Riffs by Leonard Bernstein, two works commissioned by the Woody Herman Big Band in the 50s that will feature clarinettist Rebecca Hissen.

The concert will take place at Phillip T. Young Recital Hall of the Music Faculty of the University of Victoria, Wednesday October 26 at 8 PM.

Year End Spectacular!

Après avoir eu la chance de diriger un ensemble d'environ 80 musiciens à mon dernier concert à l'Université de Victoria, c'est maintenant le temps de terminer l'année en beauté. Cette fois, je dirige un classique un peu plus sérieux du répertoire pour ensemble à vent, le Lincolnshire Posy du compositeur anglais Percy Grainger. Cette pièce en six mouvements est inspirée du folklore britannique. C'est tout un défi pour moi et j'ai déjà hâte de la diriger devant public.

Le concert aura donc lieu ce vendredi (18 mars 2016) à l'auditorium Farquhar de l'Université de Victoria et sera diffusé en direct sur le web sur le site de l'Université à 20h (Heure du Pacifique) ou 23h (Heure de l'Est).

After having the opportunity to conduct an ensemble of around 80 musicians during the previous concert at the University of Victoria, it is now time to end the year in a flash. This time, I will be conducting a more "serious" piece from the wind ensemble repertoire, the Lincolnshire Posy from english composer Percy Grainger. This piece in six mouvements is inspired by british folklore. It is a challenging piece for me that I'm eager to conduct in front of the public.

The concert will take place this Friday (March 18, 2016) at the Farquhar Auditorium of the University of Victoria and will be streamed live on the University's website at 8 pm (PST) or 11 pm (EST).

Winds of Change

Dans la vie, il y a des moments très excitant qu'on voit venir de loin. Demain, je vais avoir la chance de diriger l'University of Victoria Wind Symphony en concert conjoint avec la Musique Naden de la Marine royale canadienne.

Ce soir c'est la générale. Les répétitions précédentes étaient énergisantes et captivantes. Trois directeurs différents, Dr. Gerald Kind de l'Université, le lieutenant de vaisseau Matthew Clark de la Musique Naden et moi-même qui fait parti des deux organismes. Au répertoire, Pictures at an Exhibition par Mussorgsky, Bookmarks from Japan par Julie Giroux, Festival Variations par Alfred Reed et le concert commence avec Wind Fanfare par Joseph Spaniola.

Le concert se tiendra à l'auditorium Farquhar de l'Université de Victoria vendredi le 5 février à 20h (heure du Pacifique). Vous pouvez l'écouter en direct sur le site des événement en direct de la faculté de musique. Je vais diriger la première pièce!!!!!!

In life, there is always exciting moments that we see coming from far in advance. Tomorrow, I will have the luck of conducting both the University of Victoria Wind Ensemble and the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in a joint concert.

Tonight is the dress rehearsal. Previous rehearsals have been energizing and captivating. Three different conductors, Dr. Gerald King from the University, Lieutenant(Navy) Matthew Clark from the Naden Band and myself belonging to both organizations. We will present Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky, Bookmarks from Japan by Julie Giroux, Festival Variations by Alfred Reed and the concert will start with Wind Fanfare by Joseph Spaniola.

The concert will take place at the Farquhar Auditorium of the University of Victoria, Friday 5 February at 8 p.m. (PST). You can listen live on the website for live events of the faculty of music. I will be conducting the first piece!!!!!

Song and Dance

Et nous revoici pour un autre concert avec University of Victoria Wind Ensemble. Cette fois-ci pour le dernier concert de la session, nous allons vous présenter des oeuvres de Shostakovich, Grainger, Turrin et une de Robert Buckley, compositeur canadien. Deux anciens de l'Université de Victoria se joignent à notre ensemble pour Fandango for Trumpet and Trombone de Joseph Turrin.

Here it is again with another concert of the University of Victoria Wind Symphony. This time we will be playing music from Shostakovich, Grainger, Turrin and a suite from Robert Buckley canadian composer. Two alumnus from the University of Victoria will join us in Fandago for Trumpet and Trombone by Joseph Turrin.

Fall Colours

Ma maîtrise en direction musicale à l'Université de Victoria continue bon train. En septembre commençait ma deuxième année dans ce programme sous la tutelle du professeur Gerald King. Je vais donc faire partie des concerts de l'orchestre à vent, diriger un récital de musique de chambre et développer un projet alliant l'électronique et l'acoustique.

Tout comme l'an dernier, je vais être sur le podium pour au moins une pièce lors de chaque concert de l'orchestre à vent de l'UVic. Pour le premier concert (Fall Colours ou Couleures d'Automne), je vais diriger A Festival Prelude du compositeur Alfred Reed. Le programme musical contient également des pièces de J. S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Julie Giroux, Eric Whitacre et Pascal Perez Chovi.

My masters degree in conducting at the University of Victoria continues full on. In september I was starting my second year in the program under the tutelage of professor Gerald King. And so I will be part of the Wind Symphony concert, I'll conduct a chamber music recital and I'll develop a project combining electronic and acoustic.

Just as last year, I'll be on the podium for at least one piece of music during each UVic Wind Symphony concert. For the first (Fall Colours), I'll be conducting A Festival Prelude from composer Alfred Reed. The musical program is composed of pieces from J. S. Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Julie Giroux, Eric Whitacre and Pascal Perez Chovi.

The concert will take place at the Farquhar Auditorium of the University of Victoria and will also be broadcasted on the web here Friday, October 16 at 8 pm (PST) or 11 pm (EST).

Lights, Action: Student Spectacular !

This will be the University of Victoria Wind Symphony's last concert for the semester. We will be performing pieces from composers Eric Whitacre, Howard Cable and John Philip Sousa with Canadian premieres of works from Aaron Perrine and Jeff Tyzik.
